The City of Schenectady, New York will pay $8,000 each to two individuals who suffered injuries after a police dog bit them unprovoked outside a Hattie Street residence in 2015. Lauren Bass and Dumar Smith filed a lawsuit in December against the city and the Schenectady Police Department, more than a year after the original incident.
On the night of Oct. 28, 2015, Ms. Bass and Mr. Smith were on Hattie Street when a police dog, a large German Shepherd, bit them without cause. Ms. Bass was arrested that night for an incident involving a broken window and was bitten while being walked to a patrol car by an officer who was not named as a defendant in the lawsuit. The dog involved in the incident was among three police canines to be retired at this year’s Valor Day Ceremony.
