British Woman Dies of Rabies After Dog Bite in India.

An unnamed British woman died in a London, England hospital while being treated for the rabies she contracted from a dog bite she received while visiting India.  The woman was being treated at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London when health officials announced that she had died last night.

According to health officials, it is estimated that over 55,000 rabies deaths occur world-wide each year, with most of the wrongful deaths coming from developing countries, particularly South Asia and South East Asia.

Director of the British Health Protection Agency, Brian McCloskey, said that it is important to stress that there is no risk to the general public as a result of this death and that there has been no confirmed cases of human-to-human rabies transmission.
